Lamps for high Ceilings: Finding Suitable Luminaires

Rooms with high ceilings are often both a curse and a blessing. With a ceiling lamp that is too small, the living space quickly looks too dark instead of inviting. But don't be afraid of the challenge: even in rooms that deviate from the norm in terms of dimensions, you can create a harmonious overall impression by choosing the right light.

We show you how to illuminate large rooms cleverly and which lamps are best suited for high ceilings. With our pendant luminaires, hanging lights or floor lamps for high ceilings, you can create stately, impressive and also cosy lighting concepts. In addition to the lamp design, the right light colour is also important. Make sure that each area is illuminated with the right colour.

Use Pendant Lights for Very High Rooms

They can be found in old flats, galleries, lofts and many entrance areas: Rooms with high ceilings can be a little more difficult to design. Anyone who has tried his or her hand at lighting design knows that it is not at all easy to install light sources at higher ceiling heights in such a way that they fulfil their purpose.

Depending on the architecture of the room, various light sources are available. Almost indispensable for high rooms, however, are height-adjustable pendant luminaires. With long suspensions and lamp cables, they bring light into the room exactly where it is needed.

As for any room, lighting concepts for rooms with high ceilings aims to achieve various objectives, including:

  • illuminate the living space in a purposeful way,
  • skilfully underline the architecture with light and
  • create a pleasant room effect.

Dining Table Lamps for High Ceilings

If the dining table is located in a high room, a standard pendant luminaire simply does not reach far enough down into the room to illuminate the dining table properly. The cone of light would not fall on the tabletop as desired; the light would scatter around the room. If dining areas are planned in zones with such architectural conditions, pendant luminaires in excess length are needed as a problem solver.

At Illumination.co.uk you will find lamps for high ceilings. Select "Height = more than 160cm" in the shop using our filter option and have ceiling lamps for a corresponding ceiling height displayed.

Use Multi-bulb Pendant Lamps for High Rooms

With long pendant lamps, you not only provide functional lighting - the room effect and atmosphere can also be positively influenced by skilful use of height-adjustable pendant lamps. The sophisticated design of long pendant luminaires in high rooms makes the room appear less high but more homely, thus ensuring cosiness.

Better than any other luminaire, pendant lights in rooms with high ceilings manage to provide uniform, diffuse ambient lighting that gives the room a certain cosiness.

Our tip: For flats with high ceilings, multi-bulb pendant lights are particularly suitable. They provide more light and fill large, high rooms better than single-light source models. The effect is enhanced if the individual flames of the pendant lamp hang slightly offset at different heights. With pendant lamps that are dimmable, you can adjust the intensity of the light to suit the atmosphere and, with the right LED lamp, reduce power consumption as a further advantage.

Using Vertical Lamps for High Ceilings

In rooms with high ceilings, the motto is: vertical light sources emphasise and direct the view! In addition to pendant luminaires, these can also be wall luminaires that emit their light upwards and downwards, thus creating spotlights. This allows you to indirectly illuminate works of art, decoration, shelves and the like on the long walls, thus emphasising them and actively integrating them into the room structure. Instead of looking out of place, the long walls become part of a well-thought-out lighting concept.
