The Wagenfeld Lamp by TECNOLUMEN

When Wilhelm Wagenfeld finalized the designs for his Wagenfeld lamp in the Weimar Bauhaus workshop in 1924, he probably did not know that he was ushering in the era of designer lamps. Pursuing the goal of designing a lamp that would fulfill its purpose without restriction and at the same time come across as shapely and timeless, Wagenfeld completed the Wagenfeld WG24 at the age of 24 as a journeyman in the Bauhaus workshop.

In the right place at the right time, Wagenfeld was able to showcase his talent at the State Bauhaus, the first school to bring together art, craft and design. The Bauhaus became a home for memorable artistic and political movements. The concept, which was completely novel at the time, is looked back on with great enthusiasm today. Many of the ideas and products created there have achieved fame - most notably the Wagenfeld lamp "Wagenfeld WG24". As one of the faces of the Bauhaus period, it has become a shining legend, adorning postage stamps and winning numerous awards in the lighting and art world.

Famous Designer Lamps by Wilhelm Wagenfeld

Wagenfeld lamps have not only entered the history books; to this day there is a great demand for the most famous designer lamp of the 20th century, the Wagenfeld WG24. Fortunately, the license to reproduce the Wagenfeld WG24 and all other models that Wilhelm Wagenfeld himself still put on paper was transferred to the lamp manufacturer TECNOLUMEN. Worldwide only TECNOLUMEN has the permission to produce the original Bauhaus lamps.

Wagenfeld WG24

The undisputed most famous and popular member of the Wagenfeld lamps family is the Wagenfeld WG24 with its clear glass base and transparent stem. The Wagenfeld table lamp is available in four different versions. What they all have in common is the white glass semi-circle that serves as the lampshade. The lamp bases are available in a choice of shiny nickel, matte nickel in black or matte nickel transparent. The well-known representatives of the Wagenfeld series stage themselves optimally on pianos, shelves, and chests of drawers in the entrance area or on the bedside table as a reading lamp.

How to Recognize an Original Wagenfeld Lamp

The rock-solid construction of Wagenfeld table lamps, their suitability for everyday use and their interesting historical context make the Bauhaus lamps sought-after products on the lighting market. Unfortunately, with the high demand, many imitations of the Wagenfeld lamp also came into circulation. Using the Wagenfeld WG24 example, we explain how you can distinguish the cheap fakes from the original Wagenfeld lamp.

These are the Features of the Original Wagenfeld lamp:

  • The surface of the original Wagenfeld lamp WG24 is nickel-plated with a slightly yellowish patina.
  • The transparent stem and the lamp base of the WG24 are made of clear glass. In many fakes, however, these parts of the lamp are made of plastic.
  • The lampshade of a Wagenfeld lamp in all variants is made of mouth-blown opal glass
  • The lamp cable of the original Wagenfeld lamp is covered with a black textile cable.
  • A small detail, which, however, gives information about the authenticity of the Bauhaus lamp: The socket of the original lamp has a grommet on the pull cord
  • On every Wagenfeld lamp you should find the VDE test mark for safe lamps. In contrast to many imitations, genuine Wagenfeld lamps are tested and meet the current requirements for safe lighting.
  • The lamp cord in the glass shaft of the WG24 is encased in a nickel-plated metal tube
  • Each Wagenfeld original bears the TECNOLUMEN®/BAUHAUS identification on the underside of the base
  • The pull cord used to turn the light on and off consists of a black cord with a nickel-plated bead on all Wagenfeld variants.

Wagenfeld WG27 and Wagenfeld WG28 Table Lamps

The Wagenfeld table lamps with the round lampshade are the flagship of the brand TECNOLUMEN. But also some other lamps based on the designs of Wilhelm Wagenfeld are still produced and sold today. As classic designer table lamps, we still carry, for example, the Wagenfeld WG27 and the Wagenfeld WG28 with a heat-resistant plastic shade. They differ only in their lower shade, which is straight cut in the WG27 table lamp and conical in the WG28.

Bauhaus Lamp Wagenfeld WNL 30

The Wagenfeld range also includes an ingenious multi-purpose lamp: the TECNOLUMEN Wagenfeld WNL 30 can be used both as a table lamp and as a wall lamp.

Wagenfeld lamp WST L 30

Based on the design of the Wagenfeld WG27, a Wagenfeld floor lamp was also created in 1930: The Wagenfeld WST L 30. Despite the difference in size, it is very similar to its little sister, the table lamp WG27. At 157 cm, the Wagenfeld floor lamp is a nice size for the living room or bedroom. If you are as enthusiastic about Wagenfeld lamps with their cool elegance as we are, we recommend a combination of Wagenfeld table and floor lamp in your living rooms - ideal for a coherent Bauhaus-style interior from a single mold.
