Paper Lamps: Sustainable Living With Style

The world of interior design is more colourful and versatile than ever: Japandi, vintage, industrial - new, exciting styles of living are constantly establishing themselves, fed by the influences of different cultures and ways of thinking and in a constant state of flux. Isn't it great that so many see interior design as a way to express an attitude to life? The joy of experimentation and openness to other ways of life are constantly giving rise to new inspiring living styles and mixed forms that cleverly combine different interior trends. With paper lamps, a new trend is just emerging. The sustainable lamps have become an indispensable piece for many popular interior styles.

Where Does the Paper Lamp Trend Come From?

The paper lamp trend has spilled over from the Japanese furnishing world into Europe. Simple and unobtrusive looking, the paper lamps fit in with many modern living styles and bring a cosy atmosphere into your own home with their evenly decorative light.

Why are paper lamps coming back into fashion right now? They stand the test of time! In a world where sustainable living is becoming increasingly important, paper lamps are further proof that beautiful living can be combined with sustainable solutions. Alongside sustainable furniture made of corrugated cardboard, wooden lamps or rattan lamps, paper lamps are another resource-saving answer to the question of what sustainable furnishings can look like.

The trendy paper lamps originated in Japan. The "Japanese ball", as a typical round paper lamp is called, was inspired by the traditional Chōchin lanterns, which are handmade in manufactories. Because the paper lanterns were so popular, the design was transferred to other areas of lighting - with great success: the Japanese sphere moves into living rooms all over the world as a paper pendant lamp to show off its soft light. A classic Japanese paper lamp is made of rice paper, which is obtained from the straw left over after the rice harvest. The fibres of the straw are broken up and cooked to a pulp from which paper can be made. So that it can be used for interior decoration, cellulose fibres are often added to make the material more robust. This makes it easy to cover lampshades for floor lamps or the traditional Japanese shoji doors.

Modern Paper Lamps

In the field of paper lamps, too, the Scandinavians once again live up to their reputation as pioneers of contemporary lamp design. They adapted the paper trend from Japan long before it became fashionable here and gave paper lamps their own signature. With translucency and malleability, the design talents from the far north have found exactly the material properties in paper that fill the room with warm light, make it look inviting and friendly and thus evoke the typical Scandinavian hygge lifestyle. In addition to the ornate, traditional rice paper lamps, these Scandinavian-style, modern paper lamps are also very popular today. Besides the original rice paper, sustainable recycled paper is also used for the production of many paper lamps.

Cone-shaped and Round Paper Lampshades

Round paper lamps are the classic among paper ceiling and pendant lights. Because their semi-transparent shade emits light evenly and warmly into the room without blinding, balloon lamps are ideal lighting for rooms that need to be cosy. As a ceiling lamp, they are particularly suitable for bedroom lighting; paper pendant lights are a popular choice for timeless dining table lighting. With their simple, unobtrusive look, they suit any style of home.

Artful Paper Lamps

A characteristic feature of natural fibre lamps is a pleated or accordion fold. The paper is stretched around thin metal rings. Depending on how the metal threads are bent, this can result in classic shapes as well as unusual models. The type of frame and folding of the paper shade can provide variation in the lighting design and create artistic paper lamps. Our paper lamps, for example, which consist of several layers of paper draped over each other like frills, or pendant lamps in which the paper lampshade looks like a sophisticated origami, have an impressive effect. There is also creative scope in the choice of paper structure: should the surface appear as smooth as possible, be accurately folded or have a shabby chic look? You decide which variant you like best.
